There appears to be a compatibility issue with the above combination and some of the perl modules that come as standard with perl v5.8.8, in particular Sys::Syslog which prevents some perl scripts from functioning correctly on VPS systems. One of those perl scripts is MailScanner. It doesn't appear to affect real servers running RH9, however they should have been upgraded to a supported OS years ago.

The only solutions if you are in this situation are to:

1. Move to a VPS running a supported OS (e.g. CentOS v3+ RHE v3+)

2. Downgrade perl to v5.8.7 - this is a bad idea since cPanel v11 and some of the latest perl modules that cPanel uses don't functions as expected on anything older than perl v5.8.8

3. Uninstall MailScanner - though you are likely to start seeing problems with cPanel in the future due to such incompatibilities

What issues might we be experiencing? I have three servers running like this and cannot think of anything wrong with them, except one seems to run slow, but my guess is it is overtaxed.

Just to confirm, we had this happen on our server. You all setup our server a year or two ago for us, and I just updated to Perl v5.8.8 because we were told it was necessary and that if we didn't cpanel, etc. would eventually stop working. Well, mail stopped working after the update due to this. I was able to get our providers NOC to disable mailscanner so we could at least use mail again, but now we're stuck without mailscanner at all. I'm thinking our best course of action would be to move to another OS based VPS. Our provider informed me that there New VPS's use CentOS, so am I right in reading this that the combination of: VPS + CentOS v3 or later + Perlv5.8.8 + Mailscanner will work OK? I'd like to know before we try to move everything over to a new account.

We've only ever seen the issue with the combination listed. CentOS should be fine.

This just happened on my redhat 9 server, which isn't vps.
